Before you DITY move, read this article!

So you are thinking about a DITY move? A brave idea! Moving yourself is perfectly doable, and often the right choice when money is tight - and when is money not tight? However, there are right and wrong ways to perform a DITY move, so do not expect magic unless you know what you are doing. Here are some things to consider when weighing the pros and cons: 1. What is your budget? How much money are you willing to spend on the move, and how much do you expect to spend? How much would a DITY move cost? How much would a traditional move, with movers and trucks and the whole shebang, cost? Is the difference significant? 2. What are your resources? Do you access to a truck or van? Do you have big, burly friends who love heavy lifting, or at least can be bribed to do heavy lifting? 3. How much stuff do you have? Do you even need a truck or van? 4. What are the obstacles? Do you have a king sized box spring that needs to go up two flights of stairs and an antique grand piano that is worth more than the house? If the obstacles are too great, sometime you have to call in the professionals. 5. What is your time frame? Can you afford to take time off and do a lot of the work yourself, or does it need to be done in a day? Finally, ask yourself: which would you rather do? As with most decisions, whatever feels right for you after careful thought is probably the correct one for you. Recruit friends and ask for their advice as well as their help. Moving can be very stressful, and a DITY move can either relieve or exacerbate the stress. If you do decide on a Dity move, good luck to you, and remember, lift with your knees!
