Protecting the Environment with a Stormwater Filter
|
With acid rain and numerous environmental pollutants it is important to protect the planet's drinking water. This is where a stormwater filter can help. The entire filtration system is called a stormwater treatment system. The purpose of the system is to capture any parking lot runoff water and filter out harmful chemicals such as fuels, oils, transmission fluids and chlorinated solvents. These systems are especially helpful in factories, plants and other industrial buildings. The stormwater filter is essential to having the fliltration system work properly. They are designed for industrial areas and to be installed into any drainage basin located in any parking lot. Stormwater filters work in conjunction with special gutter systems so that they can be effective as the first line of defense for protecting the water supply. The toxic chemicals are not completely eliminated but they are greatly reduced. Not all stormwater filter systems are created equal. They all perform the same job of filtering out the chemicals from parking lot runoff. Not every filter performs at the same level. Each type of stormwater filter has a percentage rating for the amount of chemicals they keep from the water supply as well as the amount of oil that it can take before being replaced. An optimal number for these two items is at 99% efficiency and up to 15 pounds of pollutants before needing to be replaced. For more natural stormwater filter forms there are grassed filters, filter strips and buffer strips that allow for pollutants to be removed. This type of stormwater filter allows for a more appealing look while being purposeful at the same time. They are relatively inexpensive and low maintenance for businesses to have in their parking lots. What influences the ability to use these types of systems is the type of soil and makeup of the area in which the stormwater filter is needed. Not all environments are optimal for grassed filters.
