The Debate About Social Healthcare

A widespread debate has been going on in the United States regarding social healthcare and whether or not it should be adopted. With social healthcare, citizens are provided with medical care by means of governmental regulations that is paid for by taxation. Many citizens are against this system due to negative feelings toward socialism and things related to this form of government.
There are some forms of social healthcare in the United States today, such as government assisted insurance for families with low incomes. This was first adopted to help mothers who are pregnant or have children, but it has expanded to include individuals with little income and other families. These families need only to apply to the government for assistance by filling out an application, interviewing with a government official, and providing proof of income in order to receive this insurance.
There are many countries across the globe that have successfully implemented some form of social healthcare. Australia has a mixed system of social healthcare with privately funded hospitals and insurance. They have initiated an income tax that covers the cost of healthcare. This tax is slightly lower for low-income families and slightly higher for the wealthier population without private insurance. Their system of social healthcare is highly rated on a global level in its quality of care and accessibility of facilities and medication.
Many citizens are concerned about getting in to see a doctor or specialist if the social healthcare system is adopted. With countries that have implemented this system, there are emergency care facilities that are able to see patients right away. For non-urgent care, patients report having to wait between one to three months for a doctor's visit. Some people compare this wait time to scheduling an appointment with your physician at least one month in advance, so both types of systems are balanced in that aspect.
With social healthcare systems, it is often that the cost of prescription drugs are completely covered or mostly covered by policies. Canada has had much success when it comes to obtaining prescription medicine with little to no out-of-pocket expenses. Some other countries that have successfully implemented this system of healthcare are the United Kingdom, China, and Russia. America is one of the last wealthy nations that has not adopted social healthcare systems into its government and the debate continues over whether or not it is good for the country.
